Will Simone Biles Compete at LA 2028?

The most decorated gymnast in history has not confirmed a run at Los Angeles 2028. Here is what she has actually said, where her record stands, and what the LA 2028 gymnastics stage looks like.

LA 2028 status: not confirmed11 Olympic medals, 7 goldReviewed August 2026

The short answer

Simone Biles has not confirmed whether she will compete at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in spring 2026, she described her decision as still at a 50-50 and said she had asked her longtime coach for more time to recover mentally before committing to anything. She has not competed since the Paris 2024 Games, and she has not announced her retirement either.

In other words, the door is open but nothing is decided. Since Paris she has been consistent on two points: any comeback depends on her mental and physical readiness, and a home Olympics in Los Angeles is a genuine draw. Until she enters a competition or makes an announcement, her status for LA 2028 remains an open question.

What Simone Biles has said about 2028

Biles has addressed the LA 2028 question several times since Paris. The throughline: no commitment, no retirement, and an honest accounting of what another Olympic cycle would demand.

1

After Paris 2024

Biles left her third Olympics with three golds and a silver, then stepped away from competition. She said she wanted real time off, and she declined to commit to another cycle while making clear she was not ruling one out.

2

Spring 2026: still at a 50-50

At the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, Biles said her LA 2028 decision was still at a 50-50. She described being on a health and wellness journey, said she had asked her coach for more time to recover mentally, and acknowledged the physical side too: 2028 feels far away, and she felt her body aging in Paris.

3

May 2026: no decision made

In follow-up comments she repeated that she had not decided on a return, nearly two years after her last competitive routine, and stressed that the call rests on her psychological readiness more than her physical capability.

4

August 2026: a visit to the gym

Biles posted from the World Champions Center, her family's gym near Houston, showing the training floor and her locker, untouched since her Paris preparation. The visit set off comeback speculation, but a gym visit is not a training announcement, and she has not entered any competition.

The age question is real. Biles turns 31 in March 2028, and the LA 2028 opening ceremony is July 14, 2028. Reporting on her Laureus comments noted she would be the first US gymnast over 30 to compete at an Olympics since 1952.

Her record: the most decorated gymnast in history

Biles owns 11 Olympic medals, 7 of them gold, plus 30 World Championship medals, 23 of them gold. That combined total makes her the most decorated gymnast in history, and it is why a possible fourth Games is the single biggest storyline of LA 2028.

Rio 2016

Four golds (team, all-around, vault, floor) and bronze on beam in her Olympic debut.

Tokyo 2020

Silver with the team and bronze on beam after withdrawing from several finals to protect her mental health.

Paris 2024

Three golds (team, all-around, vault) and silver on floor in a full return to the top of the sport.

The Paris comeback is why the 2028 conversation exists at all. After stepping back in Tokyo, Biles rebuilt her gymnastics and won the Olympic all-around again at 27. A fourth Games at 31, in front of a home crowd, would be unprecedented for an American gymnast. It is also exactly the kind of challenge she has spent her career taking on.

The stage if she returns: gymnastics at LA 2028

Artistic gymnastics at LA 2028 runs July 15 to 25, 2028 at Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, listed as DTLA Arena on official schedule documents. The competition spans 15 sessions: qualifying, the team finals, both all-around finals, and the apparatus finals.

If Biles competes, the women's team final, the women's all-around final, and the vault, beam, and floor apparatus finals would be her likeliest sessions. Gymnastics is one of the most in-demand sports at any Summer Games, with or without her on the start list.
