Equestrian

Three disciplines showcase horse-and-rider partnerships: dressage tests precision and elegance, show jumping requires clearing obstacles at speed, and eventing combines all three with cross-country riding. Equestrian is unique as one of the few Olympic sports where men and women compete directly against each other.

Olympic History
Equestrian sports have been part of the modern Olympics since 1900 (polo) with the three current disciplines established by 1912. Originally restricted to military officers, the sport opened to civilians in 1952 and to women in 1952 (dressage) and 1956 (all events). Germany has historically dominated, while Great Britain, Netherlands, and Sweden have emerged as powers.
