Jordan Chiles Announces Her LA28 Comeback Bid

Published Sep 8, 2026

Jordan Chiles has announced she is pursuing a spot on the U.S. gymnastics team for the LA 2028 Olympics, confirming the news on September 2, 2026 in a video narrated by NBA legend Michael Jordan. The announcement came one day after UCLA revealed that Chiles will join the Bruins as a student assistant coach for the 2027 season while she trains for her comeback.

What happened

Chiles posted the video to Instagram on September 2, closing it with the line "LA 2028, why not?" The post included cameos from singer Normani and model Winnie Harlow and drew thousands of likes within its first hour, with fellow Olympians such as Suni Lee and actor Kerry Washington offering their support online. Chiles was part of the U.S. team that won gold in the women's team final at the 2024 Paris Games. She was also initially awarded bronze in the individual floor exercise at those Games, before the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that her coach's scoring appeal had been filed four seconds too late and reallocated the medal to Romania's Ana Barbosu.

Two Olympics, two team medals

A spot on the LA28 team would be Chiles' third Olympics. She stepped in for an injured Simone Biles on uneven bars and balance beam at the Tokyo 2020 Games, helping the U.S. win team silver, then anchored the team gold at Paris 2024 alongside Biles and Lee.

She joins a wave of 2024 champions coming back

Chiles is the fourth of the five gymnasts on the 2024 U.S. women's team to formally commit to an LA28 run, following three teammates who are already back in training.

  • 1Jade Carey returned to elite competition in June 2026, the first of the group to get back on the competition floor.
  • 2Hezly Rivera, the youngest U.S. Olympian across any sport at the Paris Games at age 16, never took a full season off and has since won a second national championship.
  • 3Suni Lee confirmed her own comeback earlier this summer, becoming the third of the group to declare for LA28.
  • 4Simone Biles is now the only member of the gold medal winning team who has not announced her plans for 2028.

A long runway to LA28

Full team selection for the LA28 Games is still nearly two years away, giving Chiles time to build back her routines while splitting her schedule between UCLA's practice gym and her own training. It also means nothing is settled: qualification for the actual LA28 roster runs through a full cycle of national championships and trials between now and the summer of 2028, so a comeback announcement is only the first step, not a guarantee of a place on the team.

Why it matters for LA28

A wave of household name gymnasts committing to LA28 raises the stakes for what was already shaping up as one of the toughest tickets at the Games. Artistic gymnastics carries the highest listed starting price of any sport on our ticket tracker, and a field that could include four or five of the last Olympic champions only adds to the demand.

Gymnastics tickets on the market now

Official LA28 ticket sales for gymnastics move in scheduled drops, and the sport has consistently carried the highest from-price of any event on the secondary market. Fans who want to see the returning champions compete in Los Angeles can track current listed prices through GoalTickets.
